“Plaid-Paulstretched” is a 120-minute sound installation created through extreme temporal expansion, and burned onto an audio CD. Using the audio processing technique PaulStretching, time is elongated and rhythm disappears in an attempt to hold the moment open. Through this process, a familiar audio becomes ambient and unrecognizable, as though you are listening to something remembered rather than heard.
Shaped by patterns of affection and curiosity, the work draws from the quiet objects and spaces of daily life. Grounded in moments of stillness, it is an ode to the empty barn, DMV waiting area, and old train cars. The absence of performance and lyric strips the presence of ego, suggesting that the sound may know more about the feeling. Conversations with artists and peers harbor a closeness meant to inform the structure of the sound, and mimic a shared experience.
This installation of sound emerges from states of bliss and suspension, inviting the listener to be entranced by everyday-ness.
